We anticipate summer’s arrival then with a rush of heat, we’re suddenly at the end of August. The sun starts to set earlier, and we wonder – “Where did summer go?
I have evidence of summer happening in the farmer’s – or more accurately, photographer’s – tan. Between shooting car shows, races, several concours, and enjoying much-needed idle hours on Rockaway Beach, my arms and shoulders are almost a milk-chocolate brown. Well, very milky chocolate – perhaps a khaki. For this glow-in-the-dark New Yorker, that’s quite tan!
I started off with my first sunburn at the Greenwich Concours d’Elegance in May. In June, I tested out a new lens in Connecticut at The Rumble in the Country. New York City wasn’t lacking for summer car-related events, either. Lime Rock brought ALMS race cars to SOHO, and BMW launched their all-electric i3 in Chelsea.
August arrived, and I headed to the left coast to cover the Pebble Beach Concours d’Elegance for the first time. Monterey Car Week is an overwhelming experience – not only was there the super-car heavy Concorso Italiano and the irreverent Concours d’LeMons leading up to the weekend, there were also auctions, concept and limited edition launches, historic race cars at Mazda Raceway Laguna Seca, and drives with Aston Martin and the new C7 Corvette. It was at the same time fun and overwhelming.
In between all of this, I did manage to shoot some dirt track racing at my favorite track, Lebanon Valley in upstate New York. A gallery of this work will be forthcoming.
