It was my second year covering the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. This year I went earlier and stayed closer to shoot practice and take my time. It’s a great rally to cover with the Saturday stages in beautiful Pennsylvania state parks and a deep list of competitors. While two stages were cancelled due to bad accidents, nobody was injured. Unlike last year when Friday’s Super Stages were cancelled, the rain held off and there were two nights of rallycross-style stages at the Tioga Fairgrounds. More Racing
In August, I found the Quiet Car on an Amtrak train and headed down to Washington DC for another round of Red Bull Global Rallycross. Whenever I shoot a race, especially in a series that I shoot frequently, I challenge myself to concentrate on one aspect of the race and nail that shot. Of course, I still have to tell the whole visual story and get a good mix of drivers, racing, and victory photos – but I also work hard to push through cliches or perfect areas where I could use a little more technical expertise. In DC, a lot of the Ford Fiestas were shooting fire out the exhaust going around the turns, so I concentrated on getting solid shots of that. It’s tricky – the fireball only lasts a fraction of a second, and that fraction of a second might happen in between shots even in burst mode. I think I nailed it though! Full race gallery is featured on TheGarageBlog.
I just returned from the West Coast this past Monday for another round of GRC. Los Angeles was a long weekend with a double header – one day of practice and two days of racing. LA is in the middle of a drought so I was surprised yet happy that it was overcast for the Saturday races. Sunday I wasn’t so lucky and the sun was bright and glaring. Still – a successful three days of shooting with my favorite things: dirt, dramatic clouds, and race cars.
Photo District News
Something really exciting happened over the summer, and it’s finally on the news stands – the September issue of Photo District News. PDN is a print and online magazine dedicated to the photo industry – photographers, gear, software, and everything surrounding that. When I got an email from them asking if they could interview me about shooting motorsports for their “What’s My Niche” section, of course I said yes. I’m not a small bit proud, either, that it’s an issue focusing on female photographers.
Washington Post’s In Sight Blog picked up on the issue and featured ten photographers from this month’s publication that they think you should know. I’m pretty blown away to be in such good company. Thank you, Amy Wolff, David Walker, and Nicole Crowder.
Summer Races
This summer has been full of motorsports action! The last weekend end June, I headed down to the Jersey Shore for Formula Drift. The oval speedway in Wall held the wildly popular event – finishing just as a summer storm blew in. Full race recap and gallery on The Garage Blog.
July saw some back-to-back travel weekends with a long trip north to Newry, Maine to cover the New England Forest Rally. The car rental agent in Vermont rented me a fun little Mazda 2, then told me how to not get killed when hitting a moose. I didn’t quite believe him that I would survive a conflagration between a moose and a Mazda 2. I was pretty excited about NEFR, with Ken Block/Alex Gelsomino, Travis Pastrana/Chrissie Beavis, Dave Higgins/Craig Drew, Nick Roberts/Rhianon Gelsomino, and so many more great rally teams signed up. Add to that a few wildcards like Lucy Block and Gustavo Yacaman, it was bound to be some brilliant rallying. Ultimately, Higgins/Drew added another win to their streak, and I managed to not spot or consequently hit a single moose along the way.
The following weekend, I flew out to Detroit for the first ever Red Bull Global Rallycross taking place in Motor City. A double header was held on Belle Isle, using part of the Grand Prix course. Four great races took place, between the Lites and the Super Cars over two days of competition.
Freelancing this summer has been a blast, and I’m looking forward to shooting more GRC in the second half of the season. My contact information is here on the site – I have some availability for other races in the coming months, and I’d love to work with you get the racing images you need. Please don’t hesitate to contact me via phone or email to discuss shooting or licensing images.

I Love A Parade
Especially a ticker-tape parade. New York City honored the US Women’s Soccer Team in the Canyon of Heroes after winning the World Cup. It was the first time that such a parade was held for a women’s team. Thank you Title 9!
Summer time!
The summer is finally here, and with it a steady flow of races to shoot. Concentrating on shooting more often regionally, I started June off back in Wellsboro, Pennsylvania for the Susquehannock Trail Performance Rally. STPR drew notable rally teams such as Nick Roberts/Rhianon Gelsomino and Dave Higgins/Craig Drew.
It was a great two days avoiding thunderstorms and chasing rally cars around Pennsylvania.
Summer really starts to get busy now – I’m capping off June with Formula D in Wall, New Jersey this coming weekend, and I’m looking forward to the New England Forest Rally and a return to shooting Red Bull Global Rallycross. Keep your eyeballs peeled, and in the meantime, STPR coverage is over in the Garage, and a full gallery of images for purchase is on SmugMug.
Spring 2015
Finally, spring has hit the East Coast! After shooting the media days at New York International Auto Show, I jump-started the great weather by spending two weeks in Long Beach this past April. The first weekend was spent shooting the Formula Drift season opener on turns 9, 10, and 11 of the Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix course. Fredric Aasbø took the podium – full write up and gallery is over on TheGarageBlog.com, and I have also updated my portfolio with a few new images from Formula D.
The week was an eventful week with a visit to Mazda R&D in Irvine for an exclusive look at their garage full of Miata concepts and past race cars. That gallery will be up soon on a new-to-me-outlet. Then on to the Red Bull Global Rallycross pre-season press event to hear the results of silly season, who is on what team, who is new, and see some of the new cars that will complete in 2015. It’s no secret that it’s my favorite series to shoot, with good reason – it’s a pretty exciting series. More information here on TheGarageBlog.
Then the weekend of the Toyota Grand Prix of Long Beach arrived, and I had a blast shooting there for three days. A few shots from the various races during the long weekend follow – a full gallery will come in the near future, keep your eyes here for the link.
Last but not least, I was excited to see the fruits of last year’s hard work shooting Red Bull Global Rallycross. NAPA Chassis licensed a shot of Tanner Foust, who they sponsor in GRC for their marketing materials. It’s always a thrill to see one of my photos being used – photos are meant to be seen!
In this vein, I’m open and available to work with teams and sponsors to capture dynamic images of their racing passions both on and off the track. My contact information is easily accessible at the top of this page, and I can be reached via email to talk about how we can work together to achieve great visual records for social media, marketing, and history.
Rally!
I don’t know if shooting rally after shooting dirt track, ALMS, and global rallycross could be considered a natural progression – but I have started to add it to my repertoire. While out in Nevada for SEMA and Red Bull GRC this past November (2014), I stayed a few extra days to shoot the Seed 9 Rally in Jean Nevada. It was the last race of the season in the Bilstein Southwest Rallycup Series taking place out in the desert. Full write-up and a gallery can be found on TheGarageBlog.
Last weekend, wanting to get out and shoot after a long, cold winter, I headed out to Wellsboro, Pennsylvania to cover the Waste Management Winter Rally. Winter sure decided to hit again that day, but the one advantage of it being so cold is that the snow didn’t melt on my cameras! WMWR 2015 is a regional rally associated with Rally America. I also wrote about it with a full gallery over at The Garage.
Additionally, I have added two extended galleries of images from each rally over on SmugMug. Prints of various sizes and downloads for personal use are available to purchase from these two galleries, priced for the budget-conscious. For commercial licenses, please contact me personally.
Now, if only spring would come…
Springtime in NYC
Spring has finally arrived in the north eastern United States, and with it, sunshine, pollen – and car shows! Already, my weekend schedules are filling up until August. In the meantime, a whole lot of photos have happened since February’s Central Park snowpeople.
- I went out to the left coast to cover the Toyota Long Beach Grand Prix. Waking up in Long Beach to hear the IndyCar engines practicing in the distance was pretty cool. Two photo galleries are featured on Autobytel – a Highlights gallery and the Pirelli World Challenge.
- Then hit the ground running at New York International Auto Show with Autobytel.
Last week, I received a bit of news that I never expected. The Museum of the City of New York decided to accession all of the photographs in the Rising Waters exhibit about NY/NJ during and after Hurricane Sandy, which means my photograph that was selected for the show will now become part of their permanent collection. I signed the papers to gift the photograph to the non-profit museum yesterday. The exhibit itself was incredible, and the closing extended several times. My photo of the MTA employee in the show:
Photographing the IndyCar and races in Long Beach was a blast! Not only did I get to shoot behind the ropes in the paddocks, pre-race in the the pits and the races themselves, I was lucky enough to land in the passenger seat of an SRT Viper for a hot lap with a pro race car driver speeding around the course. It was off the hook. Currently, I’m firming up plans with clients to shoot a variety of races this summer (Global Rallycross and TUDOR), as well as shooting more dirt track at my most favorite track of all, Lebanon Valley. Check in here or on my Facebook page – Pony Car Girl – for photo updates along the way. Happy Spring!
